About FigureCalc

FigureCalc is a library of free, interactive calculators for home improvement projects. We build tools that take plain measurements in feet and inches and return the quantities you actually order at the supply yard.

Who FigureCalc is for

Homeowners planning a weekend project. DIYers ordering gravel, concrete, or lumber for the first time. Contractors double-checking a bid before a customer walks in. Anyone who needs a fast, trustworthy estimate without a sales pitch.

Every calculator assumes you'll buy what you need, not what a vendor wants to sell you. Results include typical waste factors so you don't run short, and a cost range when market prices are stable enough to quote.

Why FigureCalc exists

Most material calculators online get the basics right and the details wrong. They forget waste, ignore depth conversions, or bury the answer under ads and email popups. We built FigureCalc because we kept reaching for a notepad mid-project instead of trusting the tool we just opened.

The site is ad-supported so it stays free. No signups, no paywalls, no "enter your email to see the result."

Editorial process

Every calculator goes through the same four-step review before it ships:

1. Formula verification. We cross-check each formula against manufacturer specifications, trade association publications (ACI for concrete, APA for plywood, NRCA for roofing), and at least two independent reference sites.
2. Waste factor calibration. Waste percentages come from industry norms: 10% for bulk materials like gravel and concrete, 10-15% for tile, 5-10% for lumber. We show the assumption on the result so you can adjust it.
3. Cost data review. Price ranges reference published US national averages from Home Depot, Lowe's, and quarry wholesale lists. We refresh cost ranges yearly and tag each with the year it reflects.
4. Real-project testing. Every calculator gets tested against a real project scenario, such as a 16 by 40 foot driveway at 6 inches deep, to confirm the output matches what a supplier would quote.

Experience behind the tools

The formulas aren't pulled from other calculators. They come from years of hands-on home improvement projects: patios, driveways, deck rebuilds, drywall repair, roof work, and the miscalculations that taught us why waste factors matter.

When a calculator includes a pro tip, it's a tip we learned the hard way. The gravel calculator mentions averaging depth at three points because we once ordered for a uniform 4 inches and ended up with bare spots on the low side of the yard.

Corrections and contact

If a formula looks off, a price range is out of date, or a waste factor doesn't match your local market, tell us. We read every email and update pages the same week when a correction is valid.
